Sports & Outdoor Recreation
At Whanganui Intermediate School we pride ourselves in being able to offer our students a wide range of sporting opportunities and students are encouraged to participate in school sports teams.
In addition to the regular sporting opportunities, pupils are given the opportunity to experience sailing suing the school’s own Optimist yachts and kayaking using our Whizz kayaks. We have qualified instructors on the staff.
Most of the pupils experience some form of outdoor education during their time at Whanganui Intermediate. Parent participation in class camps is both welcome and necessary.
Students are able to compete in interclass, interhouse and interschool competitions as well as Supersport competitions against other schools. There are also opportunities for students to compete in after school competitions and receive coaching from professionals.
Sailing is offered in terms 1 and 4 and is an excellent opportunity to try out a sport you may not have considered before. Sailing instructors will show you the basics of sailing and will give you the chance to try out your skills. Sailing takes place one afternoon a week and students return to school before the end of the school day. Please see Mr Beautrais in the Science Lab for more information.
Whanganui Intermediate School has hosted the Supersport and Interschool Athletics competions for the last two years and currently holds the Supersport banner for Athletics. Throughout term 4 all classes take part in athletics training and then compete in the InterHouse competition. Those competing in school teams also receive additional training.
Last year Whanganui Intermediate School won Supersport Athletics.
At WIS we offer tackle, touch and rippa rugby throughout the year.
Contact Mr Mason if you are interested in finding out more about rugby at WIS
Whanganui Intermediate has a strong basketball team and has sent teams to the AIMS games as well as Interschool and Supersport competitions.
We offer football for boys and girls during the winter terms. Training is on Tuesday afternoons during winter sport time and also some lunchtime and after school sessions are offered for our school teams.
In terms 2 & 3 WIS teams take part in the Saturday morning competition at Wembley Park. Exceptional footballs have the opportunity to participate in the school Football Academy, receiving specialist coaching.
Our team won 12/13th grade last year and our girls’ team also won against Highlands.
Mr Porteous and Mr Hall are the teachers to contact if you are interested in taking part in Football.
Whanganui Intermediate School has a very strong netball programme which runs through terms 2 and 3. We have a number of teachers who are involved in coaching and managing teams and a number of our students are in the Whanganui Rep teams. Training for netball is on Tuesday afternoons and often one evening a week (dependent on what team you are in). Games are played on Saturdays at Laird Park.
Please listen out for notices regarding netball at the start of term 2 if you are interested in playing.
If you are a parent or caregiver and are interested in coaching a team please contact Mrs Duncum email@example.com or Mrs Simes firstname.lastname@example.org
Every year we hold an interclass cross country competition which all students participate in. From this we select our team to go to the Interschool competition and Supersport. In the past we have had some excellent cross country runners and we hope that we will be successful in the competitions later this year.
We have a strong lifesaving team who train through term 1 and compete in the interschool life-saving competition.
Mrs Duncum in room 28 manages and coaches the life-saving team. If you are interested in being part of this next year please contact Mrs Duncum at the very beginning of the year.
During terms 1 and 4 (weather permitting) all classes have swimming lessons as part of their classroom programme. We also run an interhouse swimming competition early in term 1 where students can compete in breaststroke, backstroke, freestyle and butterfly. From this competition we also select our team to compete for the school in the interschool competition and super sport.
Students are able to take part in badminton competition after school on Tuesdays at Springvale Stadium. Contact Mr Porteous in the Hard Materials room for more details. All students also have lessons introducing them to the game of badminton and helping them improve their skills in term 2.
We offer 6-a-side hockey in term 1 and have a full winter hockey team as part of winter sports throughout terms 2 & 3.
6-a-side hockey is played on Thursdays after school and game times are from 3.45pm onwards. Game times are posted on the hall windows and are in the notices. The draw can also be found on Hockey Whanganui website.
Miss Robb in Room 12 is in charge of hockey this year. Please see her if you have any questions or email her on email@example.com.
If you want to try something a bit different and are a confident swimmer then why not have a go at canoe polo? Mrs Deighton is responsible for organising the teams so contact her if you have any questions. Canoe Polo is usually run in term 2.
Mr Hall and Mr Power run our cricket programme. Whanganui Intermediate usually has three 8-a-side hardball cricket teams who play on Saturday morning during terms 1 and 4. Boys first eleven play interschool matches and both boys’ and girls’ teams have the opportunity to compete in SuperSport cricket.
If you are interested in finding out more about our cricket teams please contact Mr Hall firstname.lastname@example.org.
Softball at WIS is played in terms one and four and we send a team to compete at Supersport Softball each year. Students can play in a competition in term one which is played on Saturdays.
As well as competing in Supersport volleyball, WIS students can also play in teams which compete in terms one and four on Wednesday after school.
Mountain biking is offered as part of winter sports and students regularly have the opportunity to go and ride the bike trails in the local area. Our best students are selected to compete in mountain biking competitions throughout the year.
For 2017 every student will participate in Tennis lessons as part of their classroom PE programme. This will be run by a coach from the tennis club. We will then be running a tournament at WIS for intermediate aged students.
